US home prices inched higher in September but at a slower pace than in prior months, raising doubts about the strength of the housing sector's recovery.

The S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index rose 0.3% in September from a month earlier. It was the fifth-straight monthly gain, though lower than August's 1.2% increase.

Home prices were down 9.4% from a year earlier, but nine of 20 metropolitan areas reported monthly increases. The Detroit and Minneapolis markets had the largest monthly increases -- 1.8% -- while Cleveland reported the sharpest decline at 1.6%. Every region showed annual declines for the 18th straight month.
